Growing in the Greenhouse

Winter doesn’t need to be doom and gloom. There is something really special about the quality of winter light, and though there are many less hours of it, when it is bright and sunny the effect on the whole garden (and greenhouse) is amazing. Don’t get bogged down in the midwinter blues, the greenhouse harbours the first signs of the far off spring, nurturing early flowering favourites into bloom. If you’ve planted and planned ahead then there’s plenty of new life and colour bursting through in the way of forced bulbs, ornamentals, vegetables, herbs and more. Scented hyacinths and narcissus are shooting up and can soon be brought into a cool room indoors or displayed in the greenhouse/conservatory, wait until the flower buds are strongly visible and showing hints of colour. Those planted in August may be in flower on Christmas day. If you didn’t plant any, then visit the garden centre and buy ready forced and potted hyacinths, bulbs and other spring delights and plant them into stylish containers for a heavenly scented display. Pots of flowering bulbs make fabulous last minute gifts that are sure to be appreciated and will last for weeks rather than days. Pot them up into rustic terracotta pots, tie with a ribbon and have a few handy for those embarrassing moments when you realise you’ve forgotten that certain someone. And of course if you don’t give them away, you can enjoy them yourself instead.

This of course comes in contrast to outdoor greenhouses which are very problematic when gardeners have to battle against bad weather in order to get to their greenhouse and take care of their plants – this is definitely not what gardeners enjoy doing especially if the weather is extremely bad (hailing snow, stormy days or even boiling hot sunny days!).
